I initially started learning Mandarin because I had a Taiwanese fiancé, and wanted to impress her grandparents. That relationship fizzled but my relationship with learning mandarin continued. Prior to Byron, I tried on-line internet schools in Beijing, language schools and private lessons in New York. I found that either the teachers didn't speak a word of English or they weren't really trained or educated in teaching Mandarin. That's why Byron is so special, not only is his language ability top notch, he can clearly explain difficult concepts in English. Byron makes it clear (and he happens to be correct), that the only why to learn the language is to have a good foundation of the basics of writing (汉字). pronunciation (发音), grammar (语法), culture (文化) and history (历史).

Most importantly, Byron makes learning fun and interesting. Not only does he incorporate history and culture into his lessons, he tailors his lessons to each student. For example, some lessons lam translating one of the four Chinese classics "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," while other lessons I am preparing for the standardized HSK exams. So far have passed level 2 and 3.
